When you set due dates on assignments in Canvas, those tasks will show up in the students’ To-Do lists and on their calendars. This can be very helpful for students.
First, let’s take a look at the difference between a DUE DATE and AVAILABILITY DATE.
Due Date
The due date is the date and time when the assignment is due. Student assignments submitted after the due date will be marked as late in the Gradebook. Setting this date places the item on the students’ Canvas calendar and Canvas To-Do List.
Availability Date
The availability date is a date range during which students can view and submit an assignment. Outside of that date and time range, students cannot view or submit the assignment. You are not required to set availability dates.
